Two country icons put their heads together and scored a top ten single in 1981 that combined "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels"—a 1952 country song written by J. D. "Jay" Miller, and originally recorded by Kitty Wells—with Hank Thompson's 1952 chart-topper "The Wild Side of Life," also released in 1952. Married couple Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter included the "The Wild Side of Life / It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" medley on their duet album Leather and Lace, which was released on RCA Records in 1981 at at time when the outlaw movement pioneered by Waylon Jennings had started to lose its shine. They went to number 11 on Billboard's country albums chart with Leather and Lace, which also featured covers of "You Never Can Tell (C'est la Vie)" by Chuck Berry, "What's Happened to Blue Eyes" written by Jessi Colter and "I'll Be Alright" by Waylon Jennings, Jerry Bridges, and Michael Lawley.
