Following two top-of-the-class albums – 1967's Blowin' Your Mind! and 1968's Astral Weeks – Van Morrison scored a hat-trick with Moondance, released in 1970 on Warner Bros Records. Weaving R&B, rock, folk, and pop into the album, Moondance marked a departure from the heady folk-jazz of Astral Weeks and leaned towards a more accessible sound that took him all the way to Number 29 on the American Albums Chart where it also went triple platinum. Written by Van Morrison, produced by Van Morrison and Lewis Merenstein, and recorded at the Mastertone Studio in New York City in August 1969, with Lewis Merenstein as producer, the LP's finger-snapping title track went on to become of one his go-to live staples, and most well-known songs. Taking some of the folky jazz touches of Astral Weeks and adding a sophisticated pop centre, he stirred up a romantic standard where he sings about 'marvelous nights' and 'moondances' with all the debonair charisma of the Rat Pack.
