Believe it or not, the world of pop music is full of unlikely connections. Take, for instance, American rock band Toto's 1986 single "I'll Be Over You." After reaching their commercial peak in the early 1980s with LPs like Toto IV (1982) and Isolation (1984), the group entered the studio in early 1986 to begin working on their sixth studio album. During this time, lead guitarist Steve Lukather was tasked with writing a song for Spanish pop singer Julio Iglesias. For this purpose, he teamed up with Nashville songwriter Randy Goodrum, whose resume included co-writing credits on Steve Perry's "Oh Sherrie" and Chicago's "If She Would Have Been Faithful." Even though the writing sessions didn't end up producing a hit for the Spanish crooner, they did result in the lead single for Toto's next album, Fahrenheit. Released on August 25, 1986, "I'll Be Over You" continued in the same vein as the group's previous efforts, boasting a silky-smooth mix of pop, rock, and R&B. The song is notorious for its cold vocal opening and its lyrics depict a man who regrets walking away from his former partner. Shortly after its release, "I'll Be Over You" reached Number 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and Number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
