Toto Cutugno's "L'Italiano" is as Italian as gelato and Vespas. This 1983 crowd-pleaser is an Italian-language hymn to his country. "Good morning Italy, spaghetti al dente / And a partisan as President," he begins in the first verse, making an allusion to the country's then-President of the Italian Republic, Sandro Pertini. The song is certainly of its time. "Always with the car radio in your right hand," he continues. "And a canary above the window." The Tuscany-born artist started to make headway with his music career in 1978 thanks to the hit solo single "Donna donna mia," which formed the opening song of Mike Bongiorno's RAI TV show Scommettiamo? However, his breakthrough hit came packaged as "L'Italiano," which took him to number two on home soil and to the top of the charts in Portugal. "L'Italiano" enjoyed a renewed boost in popularity in 2006 after Toto Cutugno performed it live at a charity concert in Rome marking Italy's win at the FIFA World Cup that year.
