Written by West Coast folk mainstay Hoyt Axton, (whose songwriter mother, Mae Boren Axton, co-wrote the Elvis Presley classic "Heartbreak Hotel") "Never Been to Spain" was originally featured on his 1971 album Joy to the World and later that same year performed by US rockers Three Dog Night. "Well, I've never been to Spain / But I kinda like the music," proclaims lead vocalist Cory Wells, who has also "never been to England." The song extols the power of the imagination in forging powerful mental connections: "Well, I've never been to heaven / But I've been to Oklahoma / Oh, they tell me I was born there / But I really don't remember." The country-rock ramble "Never Been to Spain" was featured on Three Dog Night's 1971 album Harmony and has been covered by various artists over the years, including Cher, who released a version of the song on her 1972 album Foxy Lady and Ike & Tina Turner, who released a version of the song on their 1977 album Delilah's Power.
