The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony" is one of the top Britpop anthems of the 1990s; a life-affirming blend of soaring chamber pop, indie cool and lyrics that strike a universal note: "'Cause it's a bitter sweet symphony, that's life / Trying to make ends meet / Trying to find some money, then you die." Clocking in at nearly six minutes, "Bitter Sweet Symphony"—which was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song—opens The Verve's classic 1997 album Urban Hymns in grandiose style. The track later became the subject of a very public plagiarism controversy involving a Rolling Stones sample ("The Last Time" on the Andrew Oldham Orchestra album The Rolling Stones Songbook) that forced The Verve's Richard Ashcroft to relinquish all rights to the song. However, it was ultimately resolved in 2019 when he announced that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had signed their publishing for the song back over to him. Urban Hymns is one of the UK's best-selling albums of all time and has sold over ten million copies worldwide.
