Despite its sugar-coated vocal harmonies and peppy lyrics, the psychedelic pop track "Happy Together" was actually inspired by a story of unrequited love that only took place in the narrator's head. Written by Alan Gordon and Gary Bonner in the early 1960s, the song was pitched to several artists who turned it down due to the demo's rudimentary quality. In 1967, the LA-based pop band The Turtles were in desperate need of a hit single after the commercial failure of their latest batch of singles. On top of that, a series of personal and financial problems had left them on the verge of breaking up. Browsing through demos sent to publishing companies, The Turtles found "Happy Together" and quickly entered Hollywood's Sunset Sound studios to begin the recording process. Released on February 14, 1967, the song helped revitalize the band's career and helped them score their first and only Number 1 record on the Billboard Hot 100. In the years that followed, "Happy Together" went on to become a bubblegum pop classic and was notably covered by Captain & Tennille in 1980.
