"Daydream Believer" is a 1967 hit single by The Monkees, penned by American songwriter John Stewart of The Kingston Trio. It was conceived as the third part of a trilogy of songs about suburban life and, even though it was turned down by acts such as We Five and Spanky and Our Gang, the song later made its way to The Monkees' repertoire thanks to producer Chip Douglas, who asked the singer-songwriter if he had any songs that might suit the group's style. The catchy pop tune is characterized by a cheerful melody that masks deeper, nuanced themes of disillusionment and fading love. Musically speaking, "Daydream Believer" is noted for its memorable piano introduction and its catchy, sing-along chorus, signifying the prevalent pop sound of the era, incorporating elements from folk music and sunshine pop. It was released as a single on October 25, 1967, by Colgems Records, and quickly reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100, becoming The Monkees' last chart-topping hit on said chart. The Birds, the Bees & the Monkees, its parent album, peaked at Number 3 on the Billboard 200 in 1968.
