Few songs are as poignant as The Cranberries' 1994 anti-war protest song, "Zombie." Originally released as the lead single from their second studio album No Need to Argue, "Zombie" was written in response to the death of Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry, two boys killed during the IRA bombing in Warrington in early 1993. According to singer-songwriter Dolores O' Riordan, the song came to her almost subconsciously while touring England with The Cranberries and was finished upon her return to Ireland. Shortly after its commercial release, the track reached Number 1 on the US Alternative Airplay chart and snatched the top spot in Australia, France, and Germany. Since then, it has been hailed as a masterpiece of alternative rock and was covered by artists of all genres, including Bad Wolves, Miley Cyrus, and Irish country-folk ensemble The Tumbling Paddies, who delivered a more pop-oriented version in 2022.
