Written by Mott the Hoople frontman Ian Hunter, the original 1979 iteration of "Cleveland Rocks" became an official anthem of the Ohio city, both as a radio staple on Cleveland's WMMS station and also as a victory song for homegrown sports teams. Twenty years later, The Presidents of the United States of America—buzzing off the success of their first two albums and their Grammy-nominated signature song "Peaches"—stepped up to cover this love letter to "the Forest City," especially for the Ohio-set 1990s sitcom The Drew Carey Show. The Presidents of the United States of America's zany alt-rock version of "Cleveland Rocks" was used as the theme song for the series and featured an opening sequence from the cast who can be seen lip-syncing the track accompanied by a choreographed sequence. "Cleveland Rocks" was included on a 1998 compilation from the Presidents of the United States of America, Pure Frosting.
