After achieving success in 1994 with their major label debut, Under the Table and Dreaming, and again in 1996 with the LP Crash, Dave Matthews Band were thriving when they wrote "Don't Drink the Water." The Charlottesville band made use of their newly expanding platform to provide an unflinching look at American settler colonialism and apartheid in South Africa, seemingly penned from the perspective of a European-American settler. The politically charged "Don't Drink the Water" featured backing vocals from Alanis Morissette while Bela Fleck of Bela Fleck and The Flecktones and The New Grass Revival played the banjo, lending this southern gothic track a country feel. "Don't Drink the Water" was released as the first single from Dave Matthews Band's third studio album Before These Crowded Streets and went to number five on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart as well as number 36 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
