English singer-songwriter Sting wrote "Demolition Man" while staying at Peter O'Toole's Connemara home in the summer of 1980, hoping it would be included on The Police's third studio album Zenyatta Mondatta. The track didn't make the cut and was later passed on to Jamaican-American singer Grace Jones, who included it in her fifth full-length Nightclubbing, released in 1981. After hearing Grace Jones' version, The Police decided to record "Demolition Man" in a jazz-inflected hard rock style, which appeared on their 1981 album Ghost in the Machine. The song eventually made its way to Sting's solo performances and was even featured as the closing credit song on the American science fiction action film of the same name, starring Wesley Snipes and Sylvester Stallone. A Sting EP titled Demolition Man was released in September 1993 to support the movie, featuring a re-recorded version of "Demolition Man" as well as several live performances by the English musician.
