"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" may have charted under four different guises in 1934 – with Paul Whiteman getting to Number 1 with the first hit recording of the song in 1934, Leo Reisman getting to Number 3, Emil Coleman to Number 4, and Ruth Etting to Number 15 in the US – but no one quite did it like The Platters. In 1959, the rock 'n' roll vocal group legends went to Number 1 with their definitive, temperature-raising version of the show tune written by US composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for the 1933 musical Roberta. "They asked me how I knew / My true love was true / I of course replied, something here inside / Cannot be denied," they begin, their voices melding seamlessly together before tackling the song's unforgettable hook: "They said some day you'll find / All who love are blind / When your heart's on fire, you must realize / Smoke gets in your eyes."

Backing is too fast and not in the same key. It loses it's emotion,
