"You got me all screwed up / So much I can't turn 'round," begins The Outfield singer Tony Lewis on the band's debut single, "Say It Isn't So," for which they achieved regional chart success (hitting number 18on the US rock chart) in 1985 and sealed their fate as beloved heroes of power-pop genre. "Say It Isn't So" – which laments a fading relationship over multi-vocal harmonies and big jangly guitars that pack a punch – was the first track to be rolled out from the band's debut studio Play Deep, released by Columbia Records in 1985 and reaching number 9 on the US albums chart. The following year, they went even higher with "Your Love," seizing the number 6 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Radio hits "All The Love" and "Every Time You Cry" came next and the band, comprising guitarist John Spinks, drummer Alan Jackman and late vocalist and bassist Tony Lewis – who passed away on October 20th, 2020 aged 62 - continued to release albums throughout the '90s, '00s and '10s, with their final studio effort, Replay, landing in 2011.
