One of the many highlights on The Notorious B.I.G.'s seminal and Grammy-nominated debut 1994 album Ready To Die—the only LP released while he was still alive (Life After Death followed sixteen days after his untimely death from a fatal shooting on 9 March 1997)—"Warning" is three and a half minutes of honest wordplay, loose-tongued chat and real talk from the Brooklyn-bred MC born Christopher Wallace. "Who the fuck is this, pagin' me at 5:46 in the morning?", he asks in the opening line, 'wiping the cold out his eye'. Now the song feels like a call from beyond the grave, taking the form of a cautionary phone exchange in which Biggie reveals his need to defend himself from attackers after his newfound fame and money, also reminding that the threat can sometimes come from within: "It's the ones that smoke blunts with ya, see your picture / Now they wanna grab they guns and come and get ya."
