Saskatoon rockers The Northern Pikes emerged in 1984 and spent the late '80s and '90s defining their left-of-center, scuffed-up alternative rock sound – which mixed indie and college rock with power-pop – across four well-received albums, including 1990's Snow in June, which was their biggest-selling LP at home in Canada and in the US. "She Ain't Pretty," was the album's flagship tune and lead single, and subsequently became the band's biggest hit, despite only going to number 62 in Canada. In 1991, the song was nominated for the Juno Award for Single of the Year and its crafty, inventive music video – which used claymation and early use of morphing – also was nominated for a Juno that same year. The success of Snow in June seemed to pave the way for their gold-certified fourth album, Neptune, which was released in 1992, and ended up being the band's last studio album until they reformed in 1999.
