"I Wanna Be Free" is a song by The Monkees from their 1966 self-titled album. The group, consisting of Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork, was assembled for the NBC comedy series, The Monkees. The song was written for the show's pilot by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, who also wrote the Monkees TV theme song. The hit songwriting team wrote, produced, and sang the lead guide vocals until they were replaced by the newly created group. Davey Jones was selected for the lead vocal on "I Wanna Be Free." His angst-filled yet underrated performance helped propel the dreamy frontman into teen heartthrob status. The diminutive singer had once considered being a jockey. He worked as an apprentice jockey until his trainer, Basil Foster, suggested him to a friend who was casting the musical Oliver! in London's West End. Jones received a Tony Award nomination portrayal of the Artful Dodger in the Broadway production.
The backing track for "I Wanna Be Free" is available as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
