Written by The Grass Roots' own songwriter and producer duo P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, "Where Were You When I Needed You" was originally intended for Herman's Hermits but when the band turned it down, the song was recorded by The Grass Roots and released as a single in 1965. Psychedelic guitar, a tambourine and swooning vocal harmonies swirl around the singer's bright voice as he reckons with a failed relationship: “Don't bother cryin', don't bother crawlin' / It's all over now, no use in stallin' / The love I once felt / I don't feel anymore for you," he states, delivering his message bluntly. The re-recorded version of the track with Willie Fulton singing (instead of P.F. Sloan) was released as a single in June 1966 and cracked the US top 40, reaching number 28. "Where Were You When I Needed You" formed the name of The Grass Roots' debut studio album, which was released in October 1966 by Dunhill Records.
