Long before the days of the Gorillaz, there was already a fictional band scoring top ten hits in the charts. “Sugar, Sugar” is a song written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. The song was originally recorded and released under the name The Archies, referring to the cartoon band led by Riverdale’s own Archie Andrews. A bubblegum pop song in the truest sense, “Sugar, Sugar” was produced by Jeff Barry. It is an upbeat number about falling in love, originally released on the album Everything’s Archie. The lead vocals on the single are by Ron Dante. And while the song was initially released to moderate success, it quickly became an absolute powerhouse, climbing up the charts and taking hold of the imaginations of young people across the country. The song made it to Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as Number 1 on the UK Singles chart, making it one of the most successful “novelty” songs of all time.
