You haven't been to a wedding or student night until you've witnessed "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers fill up the dancefloor. Oozing with cross-generational appeal, the Las Vegas band's debut single is a '00s indie-rock juggernaut that came crashing down to earth in September 2003 and left a meteor-size crater in the pop landscape. Its chorus is itself an institution: "Jealousy, turning saints into the sea / Swimming through sick lullabies, choking on your alibis / But it's just the price I pay, destiny is calling me. Open up my eager eyes, 'cause I'm Mr. Brightside." Penned by band members Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning, "Mr. Brightside" was allegedly written about the latter's ex-girlfriend who had cheated on him. The megahit, which was featured on the Killers' debut studio album, Hot Fuss (2004) and re-released as a single in 2004, peaked at Number 10 in the US and UK but more impressive than that: the UK's Official Charts Company revealed in April 2021 that "Mr Brightside" had spent 260 non-consecutive weeks – or five full years – in the top 100 of the UK singles chart since its re-release in 2004.
