"Rock the Boat" may not be technically viewed as a disco hit to many purists out there, however, there's no denying its got disco flair. Plus plenty of horns, bongos, and that hypnotic four-on-the-floor beat. The brainchild of songwriter Wally Holmes, who had founded Californian soul-pop group The Hues Corporation along with his friend Bernard St. Clair Lee four years earlier, “Rock The Boat” sailed onto the scene in 1973 as part of the group's debut studio LP Freedom for the Stallion, and was anchored by a splashy nautical metaphor: “Our love is like a ship on the ocean / We’ve been sailing with a cargo full of love and devotion.” A single edit was later featured on the outfit's second LP Rockin' Soul and released as the third single in early 1974, when it snowballed in popularity to go from relative obscurity to New York dancefloor and radio mainstay, eventually making its way to the summit of the Billboard Hot 100, arguably as one of the first disco-adjacent tracks to do so.
