American country music supergroup The Highwaymen, who recorded three albums together during their run from 1985 to 1995, covered a series of genre classics in their career. A good example of this is their take on “Silver Stallion,” a song originally written by Lee Clayton and included on his 1978 album Border Affair. The song is a story about a charming outlaw, which made it a great choice for a country standard. The supergroup, consisting of some of the most important musicians in the history of the genre (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson) recorded the song as the opening track to their second album, The Highwaymen 2 (1990). It was also released as the first single from the record. The Highwaymen version of “Silver Stallion” was produced by Chips Moman. The accompanying album peaked at Number 4 on the US Top Country Albums Chart and Number 79 on the US Billboard 200 Chart.
