Few songwriters have been able to take up residence in a song as convincingly as the late luminary Jim Morrison. When he sings, it feels like the ground is cracking open beneath his feet. On "Wishful Sinful," he dialled down some of the reckless fury of other Doors' hits like "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" and "L.A. Woman" to cast a softer, more mellow glow—but he fully embodies the track nonetheless. Bolstered by an orchestral arrangement that hands the baton to the oboe, "Wishful Thinking"was fittingly included on the band's fourth studio album the Soft Parade. Released in 1969, The Doors travelled to bold new terrain with sweeping string flourishes that took their gritty psychedelic rock 'n' roll antics to another plane. Although it did reach number six on the Billboard 200, The Soft Parade didn't hit any commercial high notes for the band in Europe but still remains an understated and underrated turn in their back catalogue.
