Freshly formed just two years prior, Californian troupe The Doobie Brothers introduced the world to their laidback soft-rock via their 1971 self-titled debut, but it wasn't until their 1972 follow-up that people started to stand up and take notice. After fleshing out their percussive attack with additional drummer Michael Hossack and replacing bassist Dave Shogren with Tiran Porter, Toulouse Street—named after a street in New Orleans—helped the group break into the US charts, propelled by the singles "Listen to the Music" (#11) and "Jesus Is Just Alright" (#35). The LP's acoustic-led title track captures the allure of the American South ("The night she is hot, Creole girls they sing / / My heart, it is pounding, my ears they ring / The spell has been cast down in New Orleans again") that inspired the essence of Toulouse Street, adding just about the right level of mystery and a sprinkling of flute.
