Dolores O'Riordan makes an impassioned plea for peace on the title track of The Cranberries' second album, released in 1994. "No Need to Argue" depicts a failing relationship and the protagonist's desire to put it to bed and move on ("There's no need to argue anymore / I gave all I could, but it left me so sore"). Anchored by a stark organ accompaniment, the hymn-esque properties of "No Need to Argue" contrast with the rest of the landmark album, which flits between the soaring protest rock epic of "Zombie" and the dreamy jangle-pop of "Ode to My Family." No Need to Argue followed The Cranberries' best-selling debut Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?—bolstered by the band's signature smash-hit "Linger"—but became a hit in its own right, producing a vital cache of emotional alt-rock numbers that championed and conveyed the culture and collective consciousness of Ireland. The album hit the number-one spot in numerous countries worldwide, including France, Germany, and Canada.
