Drawing from their much-loved world of horror tropes, The Cramps wrote the ur-text of psychobilly and their signature tune in 1978 with "Human Fly;" a vampy, fuzzy time-capsule of the iconic punk-led CBGB sound, which had emerged from the New York venue during the mid-1970s. "Human Fly" is a celebration of boundary-breaking difference, individuality, and free-thinking rebellion, as embodied by the song's titular "Human Fly" character who follows his own path in life. The track was released as a single in 1978 with a cover of Roy Orbison's "Domino" on the B-side and included on Gravest Hits released in 1979; The Cramps' first 12" which contained both sides of their first two 1978 singles for Vengeance, "Surfin' Bird" and "Human Fly," with an additional treat in the form of a blast from the past; a cover of "Lonesome Town," which was written by Baker Knight and first popularised by Ricky Nelson in 1958.
