Long before the Dougie, the Floss, and the Cha-Cha Slide, there was the Jerk, the Watusi, and the Mashed Potato. The latter dances were only three of the 1000 dances alluded to in the song "Land of a Thousand Dances." The song was written and recorded by Chris Kenner in 1962. His version peaked at #77 and listed 16 dances. When the song was covered by Cannibal & the Headhunters a few years later, Frankie "Cannibal" Garcia forgot the lyrics and started singing a new "nah nah" part which has become one of the most memorable parts of the song. This arrangement of the song was sung by the fictional Irish soul band, The Commitments, from the 1991 film of the same name. The film wasn't a huge hit in the US but people loved the music which consisted of covers of soul classics. "Land of a Thousand Dances" is from The Commitments, Vol. 2: Music from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The backing track for “Land of a Thousand Dances" is available with background vocals or as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
