M.I.A.'s 2007 hit "Paper Planes," co-written and produced with Diplo, opens with this 1982 track from The Clash and likewise confronts the issue of immigration. Then in 2008, Jay-Z and T.I. recycled "Paper Planes" as part of their track "Swagga Like Us," with The Clash credited as co-writers on both occasions. There is something timeless about this socially conscious percussive punk rocker, which was released as a double A-side with one of The Clash’s biggest hits, "Should I Stay or Should I Go," and contained on the band's fifth album and anti-war tome Combat Rock, released in 1982. "Straight to Hell" covers many bases within its four verses: post-WW2 immigration in the UK, and the racism that arose as a result, the forced decline of Britain's steel industry, as well as immigration in an American context. Similar themes lie at the heart of Combat Rock, which was inspired by the Vietnam War-era movie Apocalypse Now.
