Written by The Clash's Joe Strummer and Mick Jones and produced by Guy Stevens, "Lost in the Supermarket" is the eighth track on the band's seminal 1979 album London Calling, inspired by a defining trip to a local supermarket. With Mick Jones on lead vocals delivering a message about excessive consumerism ("I'm all lost in the supermarket / I can no longer shop happily / I came in here for the special offer / Guaranteed personality"), the low-slung song constructs a lonely, soulless world from the pillars of post-punk and new wave. You could say "Lost in the Supermarket" captured the thoughts, alienation and sense of disillusionment felt at the time by an entire generation. Released in 1979 in the UK and 1980 in the US, the rock 'n' roll-inspired opus London Calling was the third studio album by The Clash and held up as such a classic that in 2010 it was even given its own postage stamp.
