Following the great critical reception of their studio debut, 1976's Tales of Mystery and Imagination, prog-rock ensemble The Alan Parsons Project returned a year later with their second studio effort I, Robot. The concept behind the album was inspired by the Robot series, a string of novels and short stories by science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov. Very much in line with Asimov's work, the album delves deep into the philosophical aspect of artificial intelligence and the relationship between man and machine. It contained the singles "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You" and "Day After Day (The Show Must Go On)," both of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. It also featured the track "Breakdown," a throbbing funk-rock number that drew a parallel between mental illness and technological obsolescence. Written by Alar and Parsons and Eric Woolfson, "Breakdown" features lead vocals by The Hollies frontman Allan Clarke and solemn choral arrangements during its outro.
