One of the most sensual voices to emerge from the storied Philly soul scene, Teddy Pendergrass cut his teeth as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. He flew the nest in 1976 and amassed five platinum-selling solo albums in a row before retiring in 2007. "The Whole Town's Laughing at Me" is one of the gems nestled on his 1977 self-titled debut for Philadelphia International Records, and one of two singles released along with "I Don't Love You Anymore." For a lyrical exercise in self-pity, "The Whole Town's Laughing at Me's" is surprisingly uplifting, thanks to Teddy Pendergrass's gift for soul-drenched wonder. The song became a top 20 R&B hit and is an undeniable highlight of his debut album, which went to number 17 on the US Billboard 200, number five on the Billboard R&B album chart and was followed in 1978 by his second studio LP, Life is a Song Worth Singing, also released on Philadelphia International Records with Sony Music Entertainment.
