Supertramp weren't messing around on their 1977 symphonic prog epic "Fool's Overture," a tantalizingly intricate song about the fall of mankind that transcends the 10-minute mark and comprises a tapestry of historic and literary sound samples and references. The band even sample their own hit song, "Dreamer." The collage-like "Fools Overture" opens with an excerpt of Winston Churchill's notorious 'We Will Never Surrender' speech of June 1940 and the distinctive sound of London's Big Ben, before unleashing a cosmic flageolet, synth and saxophone-led odyssey in which the words of William Blake also make an appearance. "Fools Overture" was written by the London-formed prog titans' primary songwriters, Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, with the latter providing lead vocals, and was the closing track on their 1977 album Even in the Quietest Moments...
