Embracing fate, chance and the unknown are some of the main themes fuelling "Where the River Goes," a grungey rock epic from Stone Temple Pilots. The deeply evocative song depicts a wandering protagonist on an existential quest for fulfilment and is tinged with sadness as much as hope. "I wanna be as big as a mountain / I wanna fly as high as the sun / I wanna know what the rent's like in heaven / I wanna know where the river goes," sings songwriter and late great lead singer Scott Weiland, who passed away in 2015. "Where the River Goes" closed out Stone Temple Pilots' best-selling album and Atlantic Records debut Core (1992), which they recorded with producer Brendan O’Brien and which yielded six singles, including MTV staples “Plush” and “Creep." The record soared to number three on the US Billboard 200 and was certified 8x platinum by the RIAA, becoming the Stone Temple Pilots' best-selling album.
