Featured on the delightfully titled Sailing the Seas of Cheese album from Californian funked-up rock oddballs Primus – "Tommy the Cat" is built from a tricksy bassline and an off-the-wall storyline that revolves around a fictional feline – or "urban predator" – called Tommy; "truly a wonder of nature" with "many a story to tell". Loosely inspired by the larger-than-life musician Tommy Crank, leader of the Tommy Crank Band, of whom Primus bassist and lead vocalist was a member in the early '80s, the track made its first outing on the band's 1989 live album Suck On This. Tom Waits was later hired for the studio version, adding his voice to evocative lines like "Well, she came sliding on down the alleyway like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit." "Tommy the Cat" was also included on the soundtrack to the 1991 classic Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey and Primus even performed part of the song during a Battle of the Bands scene in the movie.
