Chameleonic grunge icons Stone Temple Pilots went to rock infinity and beyond for their September 1994 track "Interstate Love Song," which began life as a bossa nova piece before metamorphosing into the country-edged monster that served as the third single from the San Diego rockers' second and classic riff-tastic album, Purple. On the now tragically poignant song, the band's late lead singer Scott Weiland – who died of a reported accidental overdose on December 3, 2015 – took a candid look in the mirror to explore his heroin addiction and relationship issues. "Leaving on a Southern train / Only yesterday you lied / Promises of what I seemed to be / Only watched the time go by / All of these things you said to me," he sung in the opening verse, promising to stay away from drugs and to stop lying to his fiancé. The song went on to become a poignant and heartbreaking meditation on addiction.
