Steel Pulse aimed straight for the jugular with their fifth album Earth Crisis, reeling in the viewer with a collage depicting famous and historical figures: US President Ronald Reagan, Soviet leader Yuri Andropov, Pope John Paul II, a Ku Klux Klansman, a Vietnamese refugee, and others. Inside, the album tells a similar story, thematically diving into social and political issues like those of the LP's fourth track "Roller Skates;" a roots reggae battle-cry for self-empowerment, specifically in the face of racial inequality. Handsworth heroes Steel Pulse—aka schoolmates David Hinds (the group's main songwriter as well as the lead singer and guitarist), Basil Gabbidon (guitar), and Ronnie "Stepper" McQueen (bass)—graced the US Billboard 200 chart with their presence, gaining a number 154 footing for Earth Crisis, but, more importantly, pulled off a timeless reggae album anchored by the kind of human rights-forward morals that still resonate today.
