Assembling in the Handsworth area of Birmingham, England, in 1975, Steel Pulse aka schoolfriends David Hinds (songwriter/lead singer/guitarist), Basil Gabbidon (guitar), and Ronnie “Stepper” McQueen (bass) put themselves on the map with their statement-making 1978 debut, Handsworth Revolution. Released on the iconic Island Records, the enduring LP was a solid gold British reggae album that announced the group's roots-forward sound to the world. In 1985, Steel Pulse became the first non-Jamaican act to win the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album; their 1985 offering Babylon The Bandit helped secure the group this historic victory. "Brown Eyed Girl" is the uniquely Steel Pulse take on the Van Morrison chart-crusher that was included on their Grammy-nominated 1997 LP Rage and Fury. The album—the follow-up to 1994 full-length Vex—also featured a cover of the Gamble and Huff song "Black Enough."
