Slipknot went to nu-metal valhalla with their 1999 self-titled breakthrough album for Roadrunner Records. However, they didn't disappoint with the follow-up. Named after the band's home state, with Iowa the band plunged even deeper into the caustic cesspit of extreme, not-for-the-faint-hearted metal to draw out an even heavier concoction bubbling with feral roars and barrage upon barrage of brutal, gravity-defying blast beats. "The Heretic Anthem" is as hardcore, harsh, and unrelenting as Slipknot cuts get; a full-pelt death metal attack led by the masked crew. The track was written about record labels who initially steered clear from signing the band, sticking two fingers up to the music industry, while also touching on religious themes. In this outsider anthem, Slipknot kingpin Corey Taylor promises to be exactly the opposite of what people want: "I'm a pop star threat, and I'm not dead yet".
