Inspired by the death of the Smashing Pumpkins' keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin from a heroin overdose in 1996, Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan wrote the bulk of "Angel" within a span of three hours. According to its author, the song is about trying not to take responsibility for other people's problems and focusing on loving yourself instead. It was one of the first songs to emerge during the songwriting process for her fourth studio album Surfacing (1997). The poignant piano-driven ballad was released as the album's fourth and final single on September 28, 1998, and rapidly climbed to the top of Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart, also peaking at Number 4 on the Hot 100. Featuring sparse arrangements and subtle upright bass courtesy of the Barenaked Ladies' Jim Creeggan, "Angel" entered the European charts multiple times in the years that followed its release, and a remix by producing team Dusted reached Number 7 on the Irish charts in 2002.
