Matchbox 20's lead singer Rob Thomas jumped on this collaboration with Latin rockers Santana and scored a megahit in 1999, with the single topping the Billboard Hot 100 charts for 12 consecutive weeks. Spawning one of pop's most indelible guitar riffs, thanks to Mexican-American legend Carlos Santana, the hit was penned by songwriter and producer Itaal Shur with Rob Thomas with lyrics like "My Mu Equita" (which translates to "My Little Doll" in Spanish) nodding to Rob Thomas's wife, the Puerto Rican model Marisol Maldonado, who also pops up in the music video. "Smooth" scooped three Grammy Awards in 2000, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, while Supernatural, the Santana album on which "Smooth" is featured, also picked up an earth-shattering eight Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album and Album of the Year.
