"White Queen (As It Began)" is a track from UK rock band Queen's second album, Queen II, released in early 1974 and written by guitarist Brian May. The genesis of "White Queen (As It Began)" dates back to 1968, during Brian May's time with the pre-Queen band Smile. Its lyrical inspiration is drawn from Robert Graves' "The White Goddess," and a personal muse – a fellow student who embodied the guitarist's ideal of beauty without ever becoming a romantic partner. This blend of literary influence and unrequited love lends the song a deeply introspective quality, exploring themes of longing and idealization. "White Queen (As It Began)" features a modified Hairfred guitar adjusted to mimic a sitar's resonant buzz, creating a very distinctive guitar sound. Performed regularly by the band from 1974 to 1977, and for the last time in 1978, the song's live renditions often featured an extended instrumental break, further highlighting the band's exceptional skill as performers.
