INXS were formed in Sydney in 1977 by bassist Garry Gary Beers, primary composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, dynamic frontman Michael Hutchence, and guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly. Initially known as the Farriss Brothers, they soon adopted the INXS moniker and dropped their self-titled record in 1980. Released as their second single in 1980—following the previously released "Simple Simon"—"Just Keep Walking" is a timeworn relic of the nascent band. Comprising short, sharp, observational rhymes about modern life ("Broken bottles / Bricks and dirt / Sunshine soothing / Clouds are hazy / Dark street corners / Feeling lazy"), the angular track is strongly rooted in the pub-rock aesthetic with which they began their career. "Just Keep Walking" put the band's career on a positive trajectory; the song became their first Australian Top 40 single.
