English rockers Queen have always been known for their theatricality. Whether it's the epic roar of "We Will Rock You" or the operatic lament of "Bohemian Rhapsody," the band has always infused their music with a healthy dose of melodrama and schmaltz. A clear example of this is their 1977 single "It's Late," a hard rock and power pop song divided in three different acts whose lyrics depicted a love affair coming to an end. The song perfectly showcased Queen's thespian tendencies while harnessing the band's full instrumental might. Written by lead guitarist Brian May and produced by Queen with Mike Stone, "It's Late" has the peculiarity of being one of the first recorded songs to feature the guitar tapping technique, which Brian May borrowed from blues musician Rocky Athas. A shorter version of the track was released on April 25, 1978, as the third single from Queen's sixth studio album, News of the World, reaching Number 74 on the Billboard Hot 100.
