You can't get much more 1990s than "Colors of the Wind," the Oscar-winning jewel in the crown of the original Pocahontas soundtrack, working hard as the movie's theme tune. The new age-adjacent song is a snapshot of the time, drawn from lyrics that allude to environmentalism, which clashed with European colonial values ("You think you own whatever land you land on / The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim / But I know every rock and tree and creature / Has a life, has a spirit, has a name"). However, Pocahontas has also been criticised for perpetuating harmful stereotypes, which can be particularly felt in the song's first verse here. "Colors of the Wind" was written by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz and performed in the film by singer and actor Judy Kuhn, who provided the voice of Pocahontas. But it was the cover recorded by Vanessa Williams that was released as a single in 1995 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
