Much like the rest of the album, "Runaway" features prominent 80s dance-pop elements, with propulsive drums and slick synthesizer sounds driving the song ever forward. Its lyrics match the track's hyperkinetic feel, emphasizing the importance of moving constantly as a way to discover oneself and leave behind the troubles from the past. Coincidentally, Pink had already written a completely different track with the same name for her 2006 album I'm Not Dead. Even though it failed to enter the charts upon its release, "Runaway" was considered one of the highlights of the album by critics and fans alike.
