Patti LaBelle’s smash hit “Lady Marmalade” has endured over the years in pop music, with new cover versions and re-interpretations keeping the song’s spirit alive over the course of the last several decades. “Lady Marmalade” was first written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan, intended for Nolan’s disco group. But it wasn’t until Patti LaBelle’s group Labelle recorded their own version in 1974 that the song broke through to the mainstream. The Labelle version of “Lady Marmalade” was produced by Allen Toussaint and Vicki Wickham. It peaked at Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It has since then been recorded by groups such as All Saints, followed by an all-star cover version by Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink, and Lil’ Kim for the soundtrack to the 2001 film Moulin Rouge!
