Featuring perhaps one of the most sexually suggestive choruses in recent pop music history, "Lady Marmalade" was written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan in 1974. Heavily inspired by Bob Crewe's experiences with sex workers in the New Orleans area, the track was first recorded by disco outfit The Eleventh Hour and was then shown to songwriter Allen Toussaint, who decided to record it with American all-female R&B group Labelle. Shortly after its release, Labelle's version went to Number 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and Top Soul Singles chart. The song would be covered numerous times in the following years, including a version by Italian pop star Sabrina Salerno in 1987 and English-Canadian girl band All Saints in 1998. Two years later, "Lady Marmalade" made its way back to the top of the charts after being included on the soundtrack of the Baz Luhrmann film Moulin Rouge! Featuring performances by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink, the Missy Elliott-produced track topped the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for eight consecutive weeks.
