The crossover pop hit "The Rain" is credited with singlehandedly launching R&B singer Oran "Juice" Jones' career in the late 1980s. The first artist to sign with Def Jam subsidiary OBR Records, he teamed up with hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons and producer Vincent Bell to begin working on his studio debut, Juice. Written by Vincent Bell, lead single "The Rain" is the story of a scorned man who just discovered his girlfriend had been cheating on him. The track effortlessly incorporated elements from R&B, synth-pop, and New Jack Swing, creating an irresistible patchwork of genres that became extremely popular on dance floors across the nation. Released in 1986, "The Rain" quickly climbed to the top of the US R&B charts and even broke into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. It also enjoyed great success in the UK, where it peaked at Number 4. Shortly after, "The Rain" received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male. In the years that followed, Oran "Juice" Jones failed to replicate the success of his debut single and eventually retired in the late 1990s.
