Riding high on the astonishing success of that summer's blockbuster musical and soundtrack, Grease, in 1978 Olivia Newton-John paid homage to her character's spandex-clad transformation for her tenth solo album Totally Hot. Looking sultry and eyeliner-clad on the cover, the album's contents offered a snapshot of the dominant pop-rock and disco tastes at the time, and "Deeper Than the Night" encapsulated these trends, honing a groove that was upbeat and forward-looking. Written by Tom Snow and Johnny Vastano, and produced by John Farrar, the song was released as the second single from Totally Hot in April 1979 and went to number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the Adult Contemporary chart. Totally Hot gave Olivia Newton-John her biggest commercial solo feat at the time, becoming her first album to receive a Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
