A chance meeting with actor and manager George Greif and the real-life LA home comedian Lord Buckley inspired George Harrison to write this playful piece of '70s guitar-pop that unfolds like a psychedelic-tinged fairytale. "I welcome you to Crackerbox Palace / We've been expecting you / You bring such joy in Crackerbox Palace / No matter where you roam know our love is true," he beams in the chorus, singing of the titular residence in which the song takes place. The late beloved Beatle voyaged to Number 19 in the US with "Crackerbox Palace," the ninth track and second single on his celebrated 1976 album,Thirty Three & 1/3, on which he also provides slide guitars, acoustic guitar, synthesizer, handclaps and backing vocals. The storied album contains a lush tribute to Smokey Robinson ("Pure Smokey") and was famously recorded at George Harrison's mansion, Friar Park estate in Henley-on-Thames, which he lovingly began referring to as Crackerbox Palace.
